Exscitec was founded in 2000 with the aim of providing outreach STEM activities for widening participation and Gifted & Talented students. Alan West, Exscitec's founder and Chief Executive, was a science teacher for 12 years including six years as a Head of Science before setting up the CREST (Creativity in Science and Technology) Award Scheme nationally in 1986.
Alan says, "From my work with CREST and as Head of Science I recognised a lack of 'hands on' science provision for Gifted and Talented students.
I saw an opportunity to communicate science and technology to students through a problem solving approach and that's how Exscitec was formed."
From there, Exscitec has grown in its provision and the number of organisations it works with, including Imperial College London, SETPOINT and various local authorities. However, Exscitec's focus is still to design and deliver high calibre programmes aimed at stimulating interest in the STEM subjects to students of all ages and abilities.
